Monoject Magellan™ Safety Blood Collector Overview

The Monoject Magellan™ Safety Blood Collector product line is the first in its class to combine an integral safety needle device with a one-piece injection molded blood collection barrel. Since the blood collection barrel is integral to the needle assembly, the Monoject Magellan™ Safety Blood Collector ensures that a new barrel is used for each patient to help protect both the healthcare worker and patient. The present method for drawing blood from patients for blood tests involves insertion of a needle (which is attached to a blood collection barrel) into a blood vessel. Blood is then obtained by way of vacuum pressure, most often into a small evacuated tube-like container inserted into the barrel. After blood is drawn, the needle is manually removed from the patient. At this point, the collection tube, barrel and needle are often set aside on a tray or table. With conventional products, the needle is usually unscrewed from the barrel and discarded into a sharps container, while the barrel is often used again with another patient (increasing the risk of cross-contamination).

This common practice is inconsistent with OSHA guidelines. Unless medically necessary, OSHA prohibits the removal of contaminated needles from medical devices under the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), OSHA Instruction CPL 2-2.69 as well as OSHA's SHIB 03-10-15, Disposal of Contaminated Needles and Blood Tube Holders Used for Phlebotomy.
